Tight End: The New Go-To Fantasy Position?

The tight end position has changed so much in the past decade that it is now not only where your favorite QB’s go-to receiver is; its also becoming a go-to for fantasy sports. The line-up of great offensive tight ends seemingly grows longer every year. Gone are the days when Tony Gonzalez is the weird tight end that can rack up tons of grabs and RAC yardage. Today the top few in the league have a load of company chomping at their coattails. That is good for the NFL but it is great for the fantasy football owner.

An easy top two TE’s seem to be agreed upon by all sources. The Saints’ Jimmy Graham and the Pats Rob Gronkowski’s record setting seasons have them solidly in the top spots. The nfl.com rankings have Gronkowski first and the Bleacher Report places Graham ahead. It really doesn’t matter with these two. They are both going to get you plenty of points and solid healthy play for the entire season. After them as eluded to above, there is a plethora of choices that are almost as good. One great year could place any of these guys right there with the big two and make it a big four or five. Vernon Davis shined for the Niners in the playoffs. A great follow up year is not farfetched at all. Jason Whitten in Dallas continuously puts up good numbers. A breakout record setting year could be any year including this one. Antonio Gates has been around for a few years but he is still going strong as well. That huge breakout year might not be as inevitable, though it’s hard to be sure.

Jermichael Finley with the Packers is on the outside looking in on the top echelon performers. The potential is there and most agree he has what it takes to jump to the top of the ladder. He’ll have to stay healthy though so he remains a little more risky than the big boys above. Brandon Pettigrew has the Lions Matt Stafford tossing skins his way, but he also has to share the field with the top receiver in the league. He’s got what it takes but may be a year or two away from the huge consistently dominate TE years that Graham and Gronkowski are having. All of that leads to it being a very stacked TE field. They are the new go-to players for you too now. You don’t have to have the top draft spot to snag a really good Tight End. Here is how they shake down.

  1. Rob Gronkowski
  2. Jimmy Graham
  3. Vernon Davis
  4. Jason Whitten
  5. Antonio Gates
