The Rookie QB Class

One of the most exciting parts of the upcoming 2012 regular season of the NFL is the rookie class of quarterbacks that are starting. At this point there are five rookies starting the most important position in the game. That either says a lot about how good they are; or how bad the veterans are. It’s anyone’s guess which one. But what does it say about your fantasy choices at the gunslinger position?

Andrew Luck with the Colts, Robert Griffin III with the Skins, Ryan Tannehill for the Dolphins, Brandon Weedon for the Browns, and Russell Wilson for the Seahawks are your starting rookie QB class. How do they stack up to the big boys in this year’s fantasy positioning? It’s hard to measure anyone against the likes of Drew Brees, Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers. Obviously it took those guys a while to get where they are and there is no reason to expect those kind of numbers from the young fellows. That is not to say that you should ignore them either though. After all, there are only so many sure fire big names at that position. If your fantasy draft luck runs like mine, you probably need to plan on who you will have tossing the skin around instead of those big guys.

So how do they measure up to one another then? Andrew Luck has already gained comparisons to the legendary Peyton Manning that he is replacing in Indy. That should be fun to watch and a similar style QB to Manning in that same basic offense could put up pretty good numbers and maybe better. Russell Wilson also has heard his name mentioned with a current great in Drew Brees. Watching the tapes of these two, the comparisons are warranted at the very least. Robert Griffin III has unique skills that might or might not catapult him above the others. One thing he has that the others do not is Mike Shanahan as an architect for the offense. At the end of the day you could easily take a risk on these guys and turn up golden results. Here is how we see them stacking up.

  1. Andrew Luck
  2. Russell Wilson
  3. Robert Griffin III
  4. Ryan Tannehill
  5. Brandon Weeden
