Five players from the Packers, including defensive end Anthony Hargrove –  facing an eight game suspension for his involvement in the Saints bounty scandal — were released from the team on Friday. The other four players were cornerback Dion Turner, offensive tackle Herb Taylor, wide receiver Andrew Brewer and safety Micah Pellerin.

Hargrove’s performance has been declining in recent games and Yahoo! Sports is reporting that it is unclear if his release from the team was due to the publicity he was receiving on his impending suspension, or if his declining performance had something to do with it. The team organization has also been the center of attention revolving Hargrove’s suspension because of the scandal.

Mike McCarthy, head coach of the Packers, has indicated in the past that Hargrove wouldn’t have as much practice time, because of his upcoming suspension. McCarthy said, “”I think you have to be honest and just prioritize it. The priority is really to get the other guys ready and individuals who have the opportunity to compete for the 53 and be ready Week 1.”

According to Yahoo! Sports, Hargrove missed two practices at the beginning of training camp – one of which was for a “personal matter”, as termed by McCarthy and the second for travel arrangements. His playing time has been limited for the duration of camp – he has been with the number three and four units on defense and only seeing a rare snap with the number one and two groups on occasion.

What do you think? Are the packers just looking to have strong players on the roster and making the cuts before the season gets started? Let’s hear what you have to say!
