After suffering from at least two concussions last season, Detroit Lions running back Jahvid Best will likely start on the physically unable to perform list and miss up to the first six games of the season, according to a source mentioned on ESPN. During last season’s preseason games, Best suffered from a concussion and obtained a second one in an October game against the San Francisco 49ers. While the source states Best and the team have received contrasting opinions from various doctors involved in the situation, the Lions organization isn’t going to rush him back into playing.

Best has a history of concussions – he received a significant injury during his last college season – and that news caused some teams to not consider him during the NFL draft. In the 2011 season before his injury, Best had his first 100-yard game against the Chicago Bears.

According to NBC Sports, adding Best to the PUP list at the start of the season would guarantee that he goes more than a year without participating in football since his injury. This also means he hasn’t had much training, practice or preseason action with the team and he might have a growing period to deal with in order to get back into the game. The delay in his treatment is prompting many to go from wondering when he will return to the team to if he’ll even return at all?  NBC Sports reports General Manager Martin Mayhew thinks he’ll ultimately be given a medical go-ahead, but it isn’t guaranteed. With the various news reports about NFL players and concussions, do you think Best is at too much risk for long-term brain injuries after repeated concussions? Should he retire from the game?
